AN ANALYSIS AND DISCUSSION ON EVERYTHING MOVIES
Internationally acclaimed Hollywood director, Steven Spielberg has released some of the biggest blockbusters since the 1970's. He is undoubtedly one of the most eclectic directors of all time, with movies ranging from aliens to slavery to killer dinosaurs. Some of his most beloved blockbusters include "Jaws", "Raiders of the Lost Ark", "Schindler's List" and "Saving Private Ryan". And that's just to name a few. Spielberg is a trailblazer first, and a director second. His movies gave the entire world a new expectation for how movies should be filmed and how special effects can be used. He's an artist and an innovator. So why hasn't the money been rolling in like it used to? Spielberg's box office success has dropped within the last decade. Recent Spielberg movies like "The BFG" are a far cry from reaching blockbuster-level fame, grossing only $55 million domestically on a $140 million budget (Box Office Mojo). Spielberg's also been releasing Oscar-nominated critic favorites such as "Lincoln" and "The Post" which proved a success, but clearly didn't create the same kind of cultural ripple that a movie like "Jurassic Park" did. Nevertheless, Spielberg's brand new "Ready Player One" has given new light to the Spielberg name. The film grossed $181 million internationally, making it Spielberg's biggest hit since 2008's "Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" which grossed $100 million. "Ready Player One" takes place in the year 2045 when the creator of a virtual world called OASIS, dies. Wade Watts (Tye Sheridan) discovers important clues to the game, and if he wins, he will gain full ownership of the virtual world (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1677720/) Sound anything like Spielberg's older stuff? Rebecca Rubin, news editor for Variety magazine says, "Audiences seem to be hungry for what could be considered Spielberg’s bread and butter — the family-oriented sci-fi epic." And maybe that's just what it is. In a current world where nostalgia rules in entertainment (just look at the recent success of the Roseanne reboot), another sci-fi might be exactly what Spielberg needs under his belt. With "Ready Player One" stealing the box office spotlight, movies like "Blockers" and "A Quiet Place" may not have the upper hand this weekend. And honestly, let's hope not. "Blockers" in particular looks abysmal. But what's to be expected from a film starring John Cena and that guy who used to be on Mad TV?
